At Silos Spain, we continue to drive innovation in the biomass sector. This time, our focus is in Portugal, where we’ve begun construction on a new pellet storage facility in the city of Aveiro. The project includes top-quality hopper silos, ventilation systems, catwalks, and specialized equipment designed to ensure efficient, safe, and long-term handling of pellets as a renewable energy source.
Heavy-Duty Hopper Silos Built to Last
The installation features two hopper silos, model 04.58/10, built to endure demanding environmental conditions such as snow loads of up to 250 kg/m² and seismic activity. Both are equipped with extended support legs and a protective coating that enhances corrosion resistance and ensures structural integrity over time.
Pellets will be pneumatically loaded through a fully integrated network of pipes and valves, enabling smooth and continuous operation. Maintenance access is provided by spiral ladders measuring over 17 meters in height.
Ventilation and Temperature Monitoring System
To preserve pellet quality, each silo is fitted with brackets for temperature probes, integrated into a monitoring system that maintains ideal storage conditions and prevents material degradation.
Safe Access and Structural Support
The facility includes a catwalk supported by dome and lateral brackets, providing safe access to all key areas and simplifying inspection and maintenance activities.
Efficient Handling Equipment
Discharge operations will be managed via rotary valves, with emergency emptying available through ATEX21-certified motorized 90º bifurcated valves and manual slide gates. This setup ensures a secure and controlled flow of pellets to downstream processes or consumption points.
Safety Systems and Additional Installations
The silos will feature strategically placed brackets on the roof and cone to support the installation of fire suppression components. Vent panels will be installed in compliance with ATEX regulations for potentially explosive atmospheres.
As an additional safety measure, nitrogen injection systems will allow for controlled delivery of inert gas inside the silo to suppress combustion by displacing oxygen.
A perimeter platform around the silo shell will facilitate safe access for inspecting and maintaining these systems.
This new facility in Aveiro strengthens our commitment to sustainable infrastructure for the energy sector. With tailored solutions for every client, Silos Spain continues to deliver robust, efficient systems ready to meet the challenges of the future.
